Mewli Privacy Policy
Effective: October 1, 2026
Mewli is a real-world cat photo journal. This policy explains what information Mewli processes, why it is used, when information leaves your device, and the choices available to you.
Mewli is local-first: taking a cat photo and keeping your journal does not require public sharing. Some optional features and service infrastructure use Google and Firebase services as described below.
1. Information you create in Mewli
Your journal can contain cat photographs, cat names, notes, a place label you type yourself, favorites, encounter details, detected coat-color information, timestamps, achievements, cosmetic selections and other journal state.
The camera is used to photograph cats and to perform cat-detection and coat-color analysis. Mewli does not request device location permission for this feature. A place label in the journal is text you choose to enter; it is not GPS location collected by Mewli.
2. Local storage
Cat photos and journal records are stored on your device first. They remain there until you delete the relevant content, delete Mewli's app data, or uninstall the app, subject to normal Android storage behavior.
3. Sharing from Mewli
Sharing is always initiated by you. In the public Mewli release, the app can create a share-card image from a catch and hand that image to Android's share sheet so you can choose another app or service to send or post it. Mewli does not create a public Mewli profile, public feed, or public cloud link for this release.
Journal notes and typed place labels are not added to the share card. Once you choose another app or service from Android's share sheet, that recipient or service processes the content under its own terms and privacy practices.
4. Worldwide coat-color rarity
When Mewli has a sufficiently confident automatic coat-color result, the app can contribute the coat-color category to aggregate worldwide rarity statistics. This contribution does not send the cat photo, cat name, journal note or typed place label. A pseudonymous internal contribution identifier can be used to prevent the same catch from being counted repeatedly.
5. Analytics, diagnostics and app configuration
Mewli uses Firebase services including Google Analytics for Firebase, Crashlytics and Remote Config. These services can process app interactions, app/device metadata, identifiers, session information, diagnostic information, crash stack traces and relevant application state. Mewli's custom analytics events are designed not to include cat names, journal notes, place labels, public catch IDs, share tokens, Firebase user IDs or raw billing/backend error text.
This information is used to understand feature performance and retention, diagnose crashes and ANRs, prevent abuse, and safely configure app features.
6. Optional rewarded advertising
Mewli can offer optional rewarded ads in exchange for Paw Coins. The core camera and journal do not require watching an ad. Mewli uses Google's Mobile Ads SDK and Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP).
Depending on your region, consent choices and device settings, Google's ads services may process and share information such as IP address (which can be used to estimate general location), app interactions, diagnostic information, advertising/app-set identifiers and other device/account identifiers for advertising, analytics and fraud prevention. Where required, Google's consent interface is requested before Mewli requests production ads, and available ad privacy choices can be reopened from Mewli's privacy settings.
7. Purchases
Purchases are handled by Google Play Billing. Google processes payment information. Mewli receives purchase/product status needed to verify and grant entitlements; Mewli does not receive your full payment-card details. Purchase verification can use Firebase backend services and a pseudonymous account identifier so eligible purchases can be restored. Mewli's server stores the Google Play purchase token in backend-only records so it can re-check purchase, refund, and revocation status. App clients cannot read those records, and they are deleted when the corresponding Mewli cloud account is deleted.
8. Notifications
If you opt in to Daily Gift reminders, Mewli schedules a local reminder. On Android versions that require notification permission, Mewli asks only after you choose the reminder option. You can disable notification permission in Android settings.
9. Optional Companion Studio generation
Companion Habitat and the included local Pixel Keepsake can work without uploading your cat photo. If you own Companion Studio and explicitly choose online companion generation, Mewli first uses on-device segmentation to create a new transparent image containing the isolated cat. The original journal photo and its EXIF metadata are not uploaded by this generation flow.
The isolated reference, generation job state, approved character identity descriptors, generated pixel-art master/sprite images and animation manifest can be processed and stored in authenticated, owner-scoped Firebase services. The finished assets are also cached on-device so the Habitat can run offline after download. Online generation is optional and is disabled unless Mewli's server is configured with an approved generation provider.
10. Service providers
Mewli relies on Google services including:
- Firebase Cloud Functions, Analytics, Crashlytics, Remote Config and App Check;
- Google Mobile Ads and User Messaging Platform;
- Google Play Billing and Google Play services.
These providers process information under their own terms and privacy documentation. See Google's Privacy Policy.
11. Data security
Network connections to Google/Firebase services use encrypted transport. No security system can guarantee absolute protection, so Mewli minimizes what leaves the device and keeps the normal journal local-first.
12. Retention and deletion
Local journal data remains until you remove it or remove the app's data. Aggregate coat-color contributions and analytics, crash diagnostics, advertising and purchase records are retained according to the applicable Mewli and Google/Firebase service settings and legal requirements.
If Companion Studio online generation is used, deleting the associated Mewli cloud account removes Mewli's owner-scoped companion inputs, generated assets, job/slot state and source-ownership claims. A configured generation provider may have separate transient-processing or legally required retention terms described in its own privacy documentation; Mewli must review those terms before enabling a production provider.
Fresh installs remain local-only unless you choose a cloud feature. Enabling private cloud backup creates a Firebase cloud identity, and linking Google can make that identity durable for cross-device restore and purchase ownership. Cloud-account and cloud-data deletion instructions are available on the Mewli data deletion page.
13. Your choices
- Keep your cat photos and journal locally on your device.
- Choose whether to share a generated catch image through Android's share sheet.
- Choose whether to watch an optional rewarded ad.
- Manage available ad privacy choices from Mewli when Google's UMP requires that option.
- Choose whether to enable Daily Gift notifications.
- Choose whether to use optional Companion Studio online generation; local companion play does not require it.
14. Age
Mewli is intended for people aged 13 and older. It is not intended for children under 13. If you believe information from a child under 13 has been provided through Mewli, contact us so the situation can be reviewed.
15. International processing
Google/Firebase and related service providers may process information in countries other than the country where you live, subject to their applicable safeguards and legal obligations.
16. Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated as Mewli changes. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated when material revisions are published.
